My Big, Fat Reality

scottkrouse.substack.com

It's been a while, but I've been focusing on processes for 2022. Unfortunately, these life adjustments have brought a dose of reality. In early February:

I slid off the DEXA SCAN machine and into my worst fears. It said I was obese.

At the end of January, I’d reached my highest weight. I’ve been “skinny fat” all my life, but it was time to accept my big, fat reality.

Click here to read about the fantasy of good health when reality hits. I’ve ignored “a few” warning signs leading to this moment, but I’m aware now. Even thousands of miles run couldn't beat bad habits.

Things have been looking up since that fateful morning. I'll be sharing a progress report and lessons learned in the next few weeks. (Teaser: I'm down 15 pounds so far!)

On the Bright Side:

The early highlight of 2022 is that Tiffany and I finally had our big(ish) wedding that was canceled twice in 2020. It was more intimate than initially planned in 2020, but I'm beyond grateful to see real, live family and friends away from a computer screen.

Following the wedding, we took our two-year delayed and one-child later honeymoon in St. Thomas. Mighty expensive, but absolutely beautiful.

One of the favorite parts of our trip was pizza delivery post-snorkeling. By boat.

(I recognize it's things like this that brought me to the opening point of this newsletter, but it was a cheat week! And, it's pizza! ON A BOAT!)

Now to figure out the next child-friendly vacation… I’m open to suggestions.

Accountability Corner:

For accountability's sake, these are goals I outlined at the beginning of the year.

Complete/In-Progress:

  1. ✅:🏃 Run 1 mile EVERY DAY for a year.

    • 101/101 = 100% and 302 miles.

  2. ❌:📰 Publish a newsletter every week during the year.

    • 4/16 = 25%. My writing cadence has been…erratic. I'm reminded the best process is the one you perform consistently. Working.

  3. ✅:💒 Host wedding with Tiffany (two years later…).

  4. ✅:🥗 Follow the Tim Ferris slow-carb diet for TWO weeks. Currently on week 11.

Initial Items. More specificity, no progress:

  1. 📕 Publish 12 Book Notes. Currently 0/12.

  2. 📞 Make a conscious effort to reach out to friends and acquaintances throughout the year. (Needs a benchmark.)

  3. 🧑‍🏫 Complete two courses this year. Could include programming/automation.

    • Retaking Building a Second Brain, but repeat does not count towards the two.

    • Strongly considering the May run of Approachable Design by Nate Kadlac.

  4. 📈 Revise my website along with adding an "open page" for living transparently similar to Steph Smith. (Nate's course could trigger this along with more specifics.)

  5. 🙏 Return to routine religious practice. (Needs a benchmark. Majority of Sundays in 2022?)

Likely Additions:

  1. 💪 Work with a personal trainer for a month. I want to get comfortable lifting and building muscle.

  2. 💰 Create a financial plan for early retirement. We're debt-free. Now, we need new goals.

  3. 🏁 Complete an ultramarathon (at least 50k) prior to 12/31/22.

I’d love to hear, do YOU have any big successes or goals ahead in 2022?

Stay intentional,

Scott
